Linux has made leaps and bounds in the last few years. With the advent and mega-popularity of netbooks (cheap small low-power laptops), linux is seeping into the average family and student-home. The original 'netbook' was inspired by and designed for children in third world countries, to allow them to learn computer skills and have access to the fastest growing communications tools available. But the idea caught fire, and now average consumers are buying them up like hotcakes too - and, to keep them cheap, many of the earlier netbooks did not include any version of Microsoft Windows. Instead, they included a customized version of the Linux operating system. One of the many 'flavours' or Linux is called Ubuntu. It's one of the most well-known versions of Linux, and it's known for being the most user friendly and consumer-approachable.
What this blog is: For anyone in any of these categories, I'm going to chronicle my day to day use, frustrations, discoveries, tips, tricks, and opinions ragarding adopting Ubuntu as my primary operating system. This blog is going to be a journal of a personal experiment with the technology, yes, I am going to use exclusively Ubuntu on my laptop - all semester - that's 4 months - and am going to try to do all of my school work in Ubuntu.
There is going to be a variety of people who read this: from people who use some variety of Linux on a daily basis, those who've come across it in school (probably computer science), those who tried it once only to have it mess up their computer and turn them off from ever wanting to try it again, and those who have only vaguely heard of but don't really know what Linux is. My goal is to cover everyone as best I can. In the new year I'll start with the download, installation and discovery process, and we'll go from there.
